I have celiac disease. This is a disease where I am unable to digest any food containing gluten. As a result, I have had a gluten free diet (or as near as I can manage) for over four years at this point.

Celiac disease was originally called “sprue”. The cause for it wasn’t discovered until the mid-twentieth century. Sprue was a disease where someone “failed to thrive” — they were sickly, underweight, and unpredictably very sick, and easily died from these bouts of sickness.

Once the cause was found, it was determined that there are other sets of symptoms that can indicate celiac disease. One of these common sets of symptoms is someone who is overweight, has high blood sugar, and has frequent trouble with diarrhea and constipation.

I fall into the latter description.

I spent years trying to find the cause of ongoing digestive and blood sugar issues. My weight steadily increased; at the highest point, I weighed over 265 pounds, over 75 pounds above my ideal weight.

I’d been working with naturopaths since around 1999, and tried many things. I’d even tried an elimination diet, but it is really difficult to do — especially when you don’t know for sure that you really need to eliminate the food that you are eliminating.

Finally, a very good naturopath did a blood allergen panel to see if I had some weird allergy. Turns out, yes, I do: my allergen reaction to gluten was practically off the chart.

When I stopped eating gluten, my fasting blood sugar dropped by half. I lost 45 pounds within 6 weeks and it stayed off.

The first month was the hardest; I was constantly finding foods that I had always eaten that couldn’t eat any more.

Once I made it through the first month, I had an easier time. I started finding foods that I could eat. Things like GF (gluten free) cookies, GF breads.

Also, my health started noticably improving after the first couple of weeks. My digestion returned to normal. I felt better. I started noticing that if I got a little gluten, my body reacted violently to it. This was enough of a reinforcing cycle that I am still observing a gluten-free diet.
